St. Brigid Catholic School in Stouffville, Ontario is home to one of the York Catholic District School Board’s Intensive Support and Assessment Programs. The ISA Program is where students with moderate to severe Learning Disabilities receive intensive instruction focusing on learning strategies as well as on the development of literacy, numeracy, and self-advocacy skills. During Learning Disabilities Awareness month of October, St. Brigid Catholic Elementary School’s staff, students, and families raised a grand total of $500.00 in loonies and toonies for the Learning Disabilities Association of York Region! This fundraising initiative was the result of the collaboration between the ISA teacher and the French teacher. Their enthusiasm sparked the interest of the students in the ISA program who then took the lead in this fundraising project by turning it into a numeracy, literacy, and self-advocacy journey for themselves! Students researched famous people with Learning Disabilities, discovered their personal strengths, collected money from classrooms each day, and tracked the funds raised. In one month, these students not only raised money, they also raised their self-confidence in incredible ways as they became leaders in the “Don’t dis my ability” fundraising initiative. October was an inspiring month as funds were raised, awareness was raised, hope was raised, and students’ confidence was raised as they discovered more about themselves and their unique and tremendous abilities! It is with great pleasure that the staff at Learning Disabilities Association of York Region would like to extend our greatest appreciation to St. Birgid Catholic Elementary School for their wonderful awareness and fundraising initiatives this past October.
